Term 3 and 4 Magnificent Monarchs

Maths

This week the children have continued to learn about fractions. The children have learnt the difference between unit and non unit fractions as well as finding 3/4.

 

 

English

In English, we have started to think about features of a non chronological report. The children will be writing a report about bees and have gathered research. 

 

 

Wider Curriculum

In art, the children created their final pieces of still life artwork by sketching or painting. They worked so hard on their creations and they look fantastic!

 

During the week, the children went to see the frogspawn in our pond! They loved getting to see some tiny tadpoles and cannot wait until we see lots of little frogs around. 

 

On Friday we had a visit from Queen Elizabeth I! The children learnt all about her life and the Tudor period. They even had a go at learning a dance and making a pouch with nice smelling flowers to use when they smell something not very nice so they don't get sick!

Maths

This week the children have continued to learn about fractions. The children have focused on learning about thirds. They have also completed their two maths challenges (SATs practice papers).

 

English

In English, we have written acrostic poems about spring. 

The rest of the week, the children have completed their reading challenges and SPAG challenges (SATs practice papers). They made sure to use skills the Totally Pawsome Reading Gang taught us in our guided reading lessons to help them. 

 

Wider Curriculum

On Friday, the children were visited by Rock Steady who showed the children lots of instruments and even did a workshop with the children were some of them were able to create a band and play We Will Rock You by Queen!

 

In art, the children explored different ways in creating still life artwork; sketching, painting and making sculptures out of clay.

World Book Week!

 

Maths

In maths the children have begun recognising and finding fractions. This week we have focused on half and quarter and how this can be represented in many ways. We have learned terminologyu such as denominator and numerator and what these are.

English

In English the children have been doing poetry and more specifically riddles. Our driver text for the week was The Storm Whale by Benji Davies and the children wrote a What am I? riddle for a whale. We used expanded noun phrases, adverbs and different openers to make our riddles interesting.

Wider Curriculum

With it being World Book Week, the children have engaged with activities around this theme. They all became illustrators and drew their favourite character on a triangle to contribute to the class bunting which is proudly displayed on the window. They have visited the library and immersed themselves in a variety of stories and genres.

 

In art the children have looked at famous still life pieces of art and discussed use of focus, pattern, composition, unity, proportion and contrast. Famous artists included Paul Cezanne and Vincent Van Gogh.

Maths

This week we have continued our topic of multiplication and division. The children have focused on the 5 and 10 times tables. We have been using our 5 and 10 times tables to work out problems as well as noticing how their knowledge of these number facts can then be used to work out division questions. The children have once again been using their skills of inverse to aid them with their questions.   

 

 

English

In English, we have started our new book “The Secret of Black Rock” by Jo Todd-Stanton. The children have written their drafts for their narratives earlier in the week and then completed the editing process where they had to use their purple pens to edit any punctuation, grammar and spelling errors. The children have now started to publish their final version of their stories – which are fantastic!

 

 

Wider Curriculum

On Thursday afternoon, we were able to share with you our learning from the last few weeks and half term. Thank you to all of the parents and careers who were able to attend our year group assembly on Thursday. We hope that you enjoyed hearing lots of facts about Henry VIII, William the Conquer, looking at their bag tags and hearing them rap. As you will have seen, the children have been working really hard and have gained lots of new knowledge!

 

In science, the children learnt about seasonal changes and how this impacts plants. We took a trip outside to see what plants were growing in our school grounds and noticed that some flowers like daffodils are already out and that some trees had started to grow buds again.

Maths

This week we have continued our topic of multiplication and division. The children have focused on the 2 times table this week by doubling and halving. They have also learnt about odd and even numbers. They have been able to identify that the even numbers are divisible by 2. 

 

 

English

In English, we have started our new book “The Secret of Black Rock” by Jo Todd-Stanton. The children will be writing their own narratives inspired by the text over the next two weeks. The children have recapped past and present tense as well as writing commas in a list. They have also begun to think about how they can set the scene for their story as well as writing character descriptions.

 

 

Wider Curriculum

In topic, we have learnt about King Alfred the Great and William the Conqueror. The children learnt lots of facts about the two very different kings and their reigns.

 

 

On Friday, the children took part in a charity run with Eddie Vickers. Eddie is running the London Marathon this year for the charity ‘The Outward Bound Trust’ who do a lot of work with young people. As a school, we have helped Eddie raise some money by taking part in one of his training runs on our school field. Thank you everyone who gave in a donation for this cause.

Maths

This week we have continued started our new topic of Multiplication and Division. The children have started to look at division and learnt about dividing using the method of grouping. They have also learnt about sharing and ensuring that each group is equal. 

 

English

In English, the children have finished their recount for Hampton Court Palace. They have worked so hard on this and have produced some fantastic pieces of writing.  

 

Wider Curriculum

We have completed a DT week in our afternoon lessons where the children have been making bag tags! The children designed their bag tags to ensure they had inspiration from the brand Cath Kidston. The children learnt how to sew a running stitch and had a good go at practicing the skills. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, the children made their bag tags and applied all of the skills they had learnt throughout the week. The children did an amazing job!

Maths

This week we have continued started our new topic of Multiplication and Division. The children started the week learning about equal and unequal groups. They have learnt how to add equal groups using repeated addition and have looked at the multiplication symbol and how to use it within multiplication sentences.

 

English

In English, we have continued our work on our recount for Hampton Court Palace. The children have written their first draft of their recount and have been working hard to include adjectives, adverbs and conjunctions into their work.   

 

Wider Curriculum

In science, the children have learnt about how materials are disposed of and how recycling works. The children also discussed how materials could be more sustainable.

We have started our DT topic for this term called Cut, Stitch, Join where the children will be learning how to make bag tags. We have looked at the brand Cath Kidston for inspiration and analysed their products. The children learnt how to sew a running stitch and had a good go at practicing the skills.

Maths

This week we have continued our topic of money. We have been learning how to find the difference in price of items, calculating money, making a pound and noticing that 100p = £1. The children have continued to use “fake” money to aid their learning and have also been practicing their skills of addition and subtraction to find totals.

 

 

English

This week we have started to look at writing a recount. We will be basing the recount on our trip we had this week to Hampton Court Palace. The children will be writing about their day and all of the activities they did. They have started their plans for this on Thursday and Friday. 

 

 

Wider Curriculum

In topic we have been on our trip to Hampton Court Palace! We all completed the Tudor Times workshop where the children looked at some objects from Tudor times and learnt a Tudor dance! The children also explored Henry VIII’s apartments as well as his kitchens. The children enjoyed walking in the steps of Henry VIII which we are sure they will tell you about. We all had a wonderful day! Pictures from the day will be up soon!

Maths

This week we have started our new topic "Money". The children have recapped recognising the different coins and notes and then applied this to counting money. They have used the STEM sentence "I have £___ and ___p" to describe how much money they have. We have also been working on finding different ways to make the same amount. 

 

 

English

In English, we have read the book "Rapunzel" by Bethan Woolvin. The children are going to be writing diary entries in role as Rapunzel for this topic. They have recapped some previous learning on contractions, first person, past, present and future tenses as well as the 4 different sentences types (statement, question, exclamation and command).  

 

 

Wider Curriculum

In topic, we have started this terms topic called “Magnificent Monarchs". The children first learnt some key vocabulary we will be using over the next 2 half terms. They then learnt about some famous British monarchs power whilst they reigned and gave them a power rating. They have also analysed some royal portraits noting how the ruler is perceived based from this.  

 

 

The children have also started looking at still life artwork in art and have begun 2 new PE topics (dance and tennis).
