Help your child to read

Teach a child to read

and keep that child reading (and talking)

and we will change everything

And I mean everything.

Jeanette Winterson

We want our children to learn to read as quickly as possible and then to keep on reading -to read widely and often and be a lifelong reader. Research shows that children who learn to read quickly go on to succeed in school and in life.

In our school we use Read Write Inc to ensure that all children who come to school learn to read.  Teaching and learning focus on what children already know and what they need to learn next in order to make the best possible progress - by stage not age.  Click here to hear how the sounds should be pronounced.

One of the most important things you can do as a parent at home is to read higher level texts to your child.  This helps develop an enjoyment for stories and the motivation for learning to read themselves.  Ask questions and share opinions about what your read to engage them in discussion, get them thinking about what they read and develop vocabulary.

Inside Out Stories

Here at GEMS, we know how important reading is to you, and to your children. To support your reading choices at home, we have created an essential reading list to help build a firm foundation, enabling a rich diet of literature which progresses through EYFS. These stories offer a range of narrative styles and are intended to become firm favourites, read countless times to encourage a shared loved of reading.

Further reading lists and support can be found on the English page of the website.
