Maple Class

Term 4

We have had another busy term! We have continued learning about settlements in Geography, focusing on London. We have learnt about landmarks and the Great Fire of London, which included a fantastic theatre performance and workshop. We have also learnt about compass directions and have started to learn how to use a compass to travel North, South, East or West.

In Science, we have continued to learn about the weather, measuring temperature and learning how to measure the wind and rain - although the calm and dry weather we've had meant we couldn't investigate this ourselves! We also investigated the effects of UV light, which showed us how important it was to apply sunscreen and made our own UV bracelets.

In DT we have explored moving vehicles, learning about the purpose of the chassis, wheels and axles. We have then made our own - a London taxi!

In PE we have enjoyed continuing our gymnastics unit on learning, particularly using the large PE equipment to explore our balances and movement.

We also celebrated our love of reading with World Book Day with some wonderful costumes and some very unusual places to read!

We hope you have a lovely Easter break, and are looking forward to learning about Victorians, plants and animals in the coming term.

Term 3

This term we have started our new Geography based topic, Bright Lights, Big City. We have been learning about human and physical features, the differences between a city, a town and a village and the countries and capital cities that make up the United Kingdom. We will be learning more about London in the coming term.

In maths, we have learnt all about numbers to 20, in science we have been learning about the weather which has also been the starting point for our art, where we have produced collagraphs.

Term 2

This term, we have continued to explore the idea of history learning more about the 1950s including the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. In Science, we have investigated materials, learning what everyday objects are made from and the properties of the material. We have completed a test to find out what would be the best material for a raincoat or umbrella, and thought about the most appropriate material for a bauble.

In English we have written descriptions and our own stories, while in maths we have tackled addition and subtraction with numbers up to 10 and shape.

We have made collages in art, fruit salad in DT and reminded ourselves about the Christmas Story in RE. We also enjoyed making Christmas Decorations at our workshop with members of our families.

We also managed to squeeze in a visit from some marvellous machines!

Have a peaceful holiday - see you in the New Year!

Term 1

This term we have been learning about the past, beginning to understand what we mean by History and how things change. We have related this to something we know best - toys! We had a visit from Oxfordshire Museum who bought a range of old toys for us to look at and play with, and we also made a toy to take home.

In Art, we have learnt about the colour wheel, particularly primary and secondary colours and created a piece of art using our colour mixing knowledge.

In science, we have learnt about our senses - what they are and why we need them.
