Oracy

What is oracy?
Oracy is the ability to articulate ideas, develop understanding and engage with others through spoken language. In school, oracy is a powerful tool for learning; by teaching students to become more effective speakers and listeners we empower them to better understand themselves, each other and the world around them.

At DPA we have adpoted the oracy approach to enhance our already successful curriculum. Children are taught to learn through talk and to talk. Talk has been planned, designed, modelled, scaffolded and structured to enable them to learn the skills needed to talk effectively so they develop and deepen their subject knowledge and understanding through talk in the classroom.

What does it look like at DPA?
Oracy is seen within all lessons and can be seen in the form of teacher modelling, careful pupil groupings for peer talk, sentence stems, scaffolded talk tactics for children, careful and deliberate questioning, choral repetition, specific feedback and planning opportunities for practise.
