Curriculum
A solid foundation for your child's future...
Intent
Our broad and balanced curriculum will provide our children with the skills, knowledge and understanding they need to develop into well rounded, informed individuals. High quality text form the core of our English curriculum providing our children with opportunities to read and write across a range of contexts and for different purposes and in response to a variety of exciting first hand experiences. Teaching reading is a priority in the early years as we recognise that this provides the foundations for learning. Reading for pleasure is encouraged throughout the school using a range of strategies and our fantastic library is full of hand picked high quality books that engage readers of all ages.
Every element of our curriculum has been carefully considered from when the children start in our nursery right up to Year 6. The skills needed for each subject area and the knowledge that is linked to those skills is planned to ensure progression and depth of each strand. For example, children are taught the basic parts of the plant within reception (having already discussed it in nursery) and revised this in Year 1, by the end of that year they consider how plants in the rainforest have adapted in order to capture the most light. This is then further developed in Year 2 when looking at conditions needed for successful growth and then through KS2 further parts of the plants are discovered when linking to germination and pollination.
Children in our school experience a very rich curriculum, where they are exposed to a broad range of subjects, knowledge and experiences in order to prepare them for an ever changing world. Fundamental British Values are interwoven throughout the curriculum. Children are taught English and Mathematics every day in our school .They also have weekly science and music lessons - every child learns an instrument at some point in their school career. Remote Learning
Attendance is essential for pupils to get the most out of their school experience, including for their attainment, wellbeing and wider life chances. Remote education is not an equal alternative to attendance in school and will only be used as a last resort where the alternative would be no education.
Remote education will be considered when:
- school closures or restrictions on attendance, where school access for pupils is restricted
- Individual cases where a pupil is unable to attend school but is able to learn.
Individual cases where a pupil is unable to attend school but is able to learn
This is for very limited circumstances and should only involve a short term absence:
- Recovering from a short term infectious illness
- preparing for or recovering from some operations
- recovering from injuries where attendance might inhibit recovery.
In some exceptional cases, these circumstances might also include pupils whose attendance has been affected by a special educational need or disability or a mental health issue. In these circumstances. this will be considered on a case by case basis. This will be part of a plan to reintegrate back to school.
Google Classroom
Every child will have access to Google Classroom. Teachers will place work in the 'classroom' for the child to complete which will reflect the high quality, meaningful, ambitious curriculum that we offer. In periods of long closures (longer than a day) for the whole school, this would include live or recorded video lessons or sessions. This would not be possible for an individual child. Online video lessons may not necessarily feature schools staff and will consider the impact of screen time, providing adequate breaks for pupils and staff during remote education.
