Long term or Complex Medical Conditions

If your child has a long term medical condition that requires and possibly medication, it is vital that you let the school office know as soon as possible so that the school can support your child correctly.

Children with complex, ongoing or high risk medical needs will require an Individual Health Care Plan (IHCP). This is created in partnership with you as parents/carers and, usually the SENCo or Family Support worker, and health care professionals.  This will be reviewed at least annually unless the medical needs of the child have changed.

    Children with Severe Allergies

If a pupil has a severe allergy, it is essential that parents/carers provide the school with two Adrenaline -Auto injectors (AAI's) as well as any other allergy medication your child might need.  Parents are responsible for keeping all medication in date and must replace any that have expired. Medication is kept in the classroom so that it is easily accessible.

    Food Allergies

Food allergy is common and we carefully consider this within our day to day work.

    • Any cookery within the class is carefully planned to avoid the known allergens that parents have made school aware of.
    • We do not allow food to be given out as treats - for example, sweets for birthdays.

    School Meals

Our catering company does have a provision for medical and special diets in school. It is vital that parents keep the catering company up to date with any changing allergies.  Meals are kept separate and children wear a white wrist band to indicate that they have allergies. They are also accompanied by school staff.

    Asthma

If your child has been prescribed an inhaler, you must let the school office know as soon as possible.  Every child with asthma should have an up to date, personalised asthma action plan that has been drawn up by health professionals, detailing their triggers, daily medication and steps for worsening symptoms.

    What to do next

    • If your child has asthma or a severe allergy and you have not yet let school know, please do so as soon as possible.
    • Please bring with you the medical plan from your health care professional for allergies or asthma, and any information that you may have regarding your child's condition.
    • If you believe your child requires an Individual Health Care Plan please make an appointment at the school office.
